Timbercorp supports new Wemen town hall
12-Jan-2009
The town of Wemen recently opened a new town hall, helped by a donation from Timbercorp.
Wemen is located nearby Timbercorps almond and olive properties in northern Victoria. After the previous hall was closed due to termite damage, the local community rallied to build a new one to ensure the small town maintained a central meeting place and a sense of identity.
The funding for the hall came from a variety of sources, including Government grants, donations from local residents and $10,000 from Timbercorps Community Partnership Program.
The area around Wemen has a century-long history of farming, although the community has been under pressure in recent years from drought.
Timbercorps investment in developing more than 4,000 hectares of almonds and olives around Wemen since 2001 has increased the companys commitment to the area. More than 200 new jobs have been created by this investment, many of which have gone to residents from in and around Wemen.
The new hall was officially opened in late December 2008. Country and western singer and former Wemen resident, Sarah Storer, entertained locals and invited guests at the opening ceremony.
Timbercorp seeks to support local communities where our large scale horticulture and forestry enterprises are located.
