Land donated to indigenous community
23-Nov-2008

MEDIA STATEMENT

Timbercorp Limited has transferred a parcel of land surrounding the Lake Condah Cemetery in western Victoria to the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

The approximately eight hectare site was originally intended to form part of Timbercorp’s plantation forestry estate, however in the development process a traditional walking trail of the Gunditjmara people and possible burial sites were identified.

The site was donated by Timbercorp to coincide with the transfer of the deeds to Lake Condah and the nearby cemetery by the Australian Government to Gunditj Mirring.

Timbercorp is committed to preserving and protecting Aboriginal cultural heritage located within our estates and was pleased to transfer this section of the plantation due to its significance to the Gunditjmara people.

The Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation has initiated many important projects that are based on the principles of sustainable development and broader community engagement. This land transfer is an important step in the development of the Lake Condah and the Tyrendarra district as an environmental and cultural heritage park.
